MALT was incorporated in 1987 as the “Middlebury Land Trust” with the purpose of preserving key open and scenic lands in Middlebury. At that time, Middlebury had a local farmland tax abatement program. When the State re-instituted their tax abatement program, Middlebury residents voted to transfer the money they were paying into the local program into a conservation fund. The land trust was charged with advising the select board on the use of these funds. One-half of the income from the Conservation Fund is provided to the Land Trust for administrative support.
We are proud of the amount of land we have conserved so far, and we are very grateful to the many people and organizations whose ideas and support have been integral to our success. Landowners have their lands protected in perpetuity by selling or donating a conservation easement to MALT. Donors, including individuals, institutions, and governmental agencies have provided financial resources to help us protect Addison County's agricultural and forestry heritage and preserve its spectacular views of the Green Moutains, the Adirondack Mountains, and Lake Champlain. Camp and hike leaders have generously donated time and expertise to help us educate many people about the importance of Addison County's forests and farmlands and the need to preserve them, through informational hikes and children's camps: Volunteers and interns help MALT by assisting with office work, staffing special events like the T3, and spending many hardworking hours on the TAM: Partners are organizations & agencies who help MALT with funding in form of grants, or by donating goods or services.
