In Memoriam: Jeff Howarth
Jeffrey Howarth (1971–2026) was a beloved associate professor of geography at Middlebury College whose passion for landscapes, conservation, and the power of maps inspired generations of students. Through his teaching of GIS, cartography, and land-use planning, Jeff helped people see the deep connections between humans and the natural world and encouraged his students to use their knowledge to make the world better. His curiosity, generosity as a teacher, and love for the landscapes of Vermont and beyond left a lasting imprint on the Middlebury community. MALT is honored to receive gifts made in Jeff’s memory and to help carry forward the spirit of care for the land that he championed.
Gifts in Jeff’s memory will support MALT’s work conserving land and caring for the trails and landscapes that enrich the Middlebury community.
As of March 10, 2026, $1521.29 has already been donated to MALT in memory of Jeff Hogwarth.
