WHERE: Southern Wright Park

WHO: Anyone who enjoys art and the great outdoors!

COST: Free

WHAT:  As part of Vermont Craft Council’s Spring Open Studio Weekend, MALT is teaming up with Middlebury Studio School and TAM Award designer, Mira Cabrera, to host an immersive workshop at Wright Park.

Entitled "Art on the Trails," this workshop invites art enthusiasts, environmentalists, and curious minds of all ages to explore the enduring relationship between art and the natural environment through Mira’s abstract paintings.  Participants will engage directly with the landscape that inspires Mira's work, walking a trail displaying her paintings and learning about the process of refining pigments from foraged materials.

 Event Highlights:

  • Guided Art Trail Walk: Embark on a sensory journey along the Wright Park River loop, where Mira's paintings emerge as natural landmarks, inviting reflection on the interconnectedness of art and the environment.

  • Foraging and Refining Demo: Gain insights into the ancient art of pigment foraging and refinement. Mira will unveil the secrets of how she transforms raw earth and plants into vibrant, sustainable art materials.

  • Hands-On Painting Session: Unleash your creativity as you experiment with natural pigments and watercolor paints. Participants will be invited to create their own masterpieces to take home, guided by Mira's expert instruction.

  • Sustainability in Art: Learn about how contemporary artists can contribute to conservation by reinforcing our connection to the environment.

This workshop is designed to introduce the technical aspects of working with natural pigments and to inspire a deeper appreciation for our natural world's beauty and fragility. "The TAM offers the perfect setting to connect with nature and explore the infinite possibilities of environment-based art," says Mira. "I look forward to sharing my passion and knowledge with others, in a community that values both artistic expression and environmental stewardship."

A Middlebury VT native, Meg can often be found in the forests of her childhood practicing what she calls “mushroom yoga" -- laying on the ground, standing on her head, or balancing precariously on a log -- to capture the perfect snail's-eye view of her favorite photo subject: Fungi! Her colorful, highly detailed mushroom portraits offer an intimate look into the often-overlooked world of these extraordinary organisms. Inspired by the belief that people are more likely to take care of something they love, she finds great joy in facilitating fun and meaningful connections between humans and nature. Meg shares her knowledge and contagious passion for the fantastic world of fungi through visually engaging presentations, mushroom walks, and via her Instagram gallery @megmaddendesign. An advocate for fungal diversity and community science, Meg teaches iNaturalist classes, organizes educational workshops and Bioblitzes, and is compiling an Atlas Of Fungi for the state of Vermont.

WHAT: Hey this is Simon here – Education Manager at MALT. I’ll be totally honest: I’ve never built a Quinzhee before. But it looks very cool, and I think we can work together to figure it out. In the morning, we’ll use shovels to build a massive dome of snow. After a break to warm up and allow the snow to settle and pack, we’ll carve the dome from the inside-out. When we’re finished, we’ll hopefully have a shelter that can fit four-to-six people inside at a time. At the very least, we’ll have stayed warm and made some great memories. BYO snow shovel and a mug for hot cocoa. Feel free to bring other snow sports equipment – Wright Park has some fantastic opportunities to play outside. We’ll have a fire going to keep warm, and we’ll have hot cocoa. Feel free to bring snacks and refreshments.

CANCELLATION POLICY: MALT operates programs outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. If weather conditions are hazardous (lightning, sustained winds >30m.p.h.), MALT may cancel the program. MALT will reach out to all registered folks to inform them about cancellations.

WHAT: The Overstory, winner of the 2019 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, is a sweeping, impassioned work of activism and resistance that is also a stunning evocation of the natural world. Richard Powers’s twelfth novel unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fables that range from antebellum New York to the late twentieth-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. This is the story of a handful of people who learn how to see that world and who are drawn into its unfolding catastrophe.

Join Renee Ursitti (Adult Services and Circulation Librarian, Ilsley Public Library) and Simon Schreier (Education Manager, Middlebury Area Land Trust) for a lively discussion of this epic ecological narrative. We will meet in Otter Creek Gorge, underneath an ancient and beloved oak tree.

Come prepared for a short walk over a mowed field. Bring water and a picnic chair. There are no facilities on site – please plan accordingly.

Madden will help you delve into the fascinating world of fungi and how to identify wild mushrooms. As a myco-educator Meg loves to share her knowledge of the natural world, particularly when it comes to all things fungi.
