Meet & Mingle #3: Securing the Rights of Future Generations: A Path Toward a Green Amendment for Vermont with Chris Brooks
Modern U.S. environmental law regimes fail to address adequately the urgent crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. This discussion will explore the necessary shift away from these failing systems toward Earth Jurisprudence and Ecological law, legal philosophies recognizing nature’s inherent right to exist and thrive. Central to this transition at the state level is the Green Amendment—a constitutional provision that recognizes a healthy environment as a fundamental and inalienable right on par with free speech. By establishing the state as a trustee of natural resources, a green amendment would provide a vital "regulatory backstop" to protect Vermont’s biodiversity and climate for present and future generations. We will discuss how new legal frameworks can empower Vermonters to protect ecological integrity in perpetuity, regardless of shifting political tides.
